US television this month has featured two specials on the impact of Latino culture on life in the United States.  Both these specials, Latin Music USA and Latino in America should soon be available through the library.  This week they are also available on reserve in the Global Studio.  Ask at the Assistants’ desk.

What is it like to study abroad in a French-speaking country?  Students who have recently returned from programs in Canada (McGill), Sénégal, and France (IES/MICEFA Paris, Lille, La Rochelle) will share their experiences today, October 20.

that you can watch TV from around the world on the Richmond campus?

Eight channels of television–mostly in languages other than English–are available through the campus cable system.  Watching TV is a great way to learn about languages and cultures while you’re being entertained.

In the Global Studio and Other Classroom Buildings

The Global Studio manages channels 7 – 11, which are available in the academic buildings on campus.  (If you’re in an academic building and cannot receive these channels, send e-mail to Sharon Scinicariello.)

The channel line-up changes according to the requests of faculty and students, but the normal line-up is:

• Channel 7:  TV5 Monde (French)
• Channel 8:  RAI (Italian) / Russian
• Channel 9:  Chinese / Japanese
• Channel 10:  Arabic
• Channel 11:  Spanish

The Studio receives 40+ channels of international programming via DishNet.  A complete listing is on the Global Studio web.  Faculty and students can request the showing of specific programming using a form on the Global Studio web.  Notice of changes in the channel line-up are sent up through the Studio’s Twitter feed.

News on Videotape

The Studio routinely tapes news broadcasts from Spain, Mexico, and the French-speaking world.  The tapes are available in the Global Studio for one week.  Ask for a tape at the Assistants’ desk.  News from Mexico is not available on the weekend; entertainment programming from Spain is recorded instead.

Prof. Rebeca Cortazar from Universidad de Deusto – Bilbao campus will be available to meet with students interested in studying at the University of Deusto this afternoon (Wednesday, October 14) at 5 pm in Puryear room 114 (International Resource Center).

On Thursday, October 1, Professor Horacio Legrás will speak on 1921, como la cultura inventó un país para la revolución Mexicana.  Professor Legrás, from the University of California at Irvine, is a well-known specialist in cultural studies, and this lecture is an introduction to his next book.

A reception will follow the lecture.

Join us at the African Film Series!

For the fifth year, the University community will gather with guest experts to view and discuss films from Africa or with African themes.  This year the series features three original adaptations–two made in Africa–of Prosper Mérimée’s Carmen, which has been adapted for film 52 times.

Each film in this special program will be preceded by comments and followed by a discussion led by Dr. Kenneth Harrow, Professor of English at Michigan State University, who specializes in African Literature and Cinema, Caribbean Literature, Third World Cinema, and Postcolonial and Feminist Theory.  There will be a luncheon buffet following the screening of Carmen Jones.

Special Pre-Series Lecture: On Thursday, September 24, Professor Kandioura Dramé, of the University of Virginia, will speak on  ”Pierre Boilat, the 19th-century Senegalese Philosopher: An Early Counter-Discourse of Africa as the Dark Continent.”   This lecture will take place from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. in Weinstein Hall’s Brown-Alley Room.
