Based on original research, Professor Alexander Flores will show how Sayyed Darwish and Bayram al-Tunisi, collaborators in the creation of the earliest forms of modern musical theater in Egypt, were influenced by Offenbach.  Professor Flores, from the University of Bremen (Germany), is both a specialist in the modern social history of the Middle East and a music historian.

Through Shakespeare’s play The Tempest, Professor Ania Loomba will argue that globalization should be traced back to the Renaissance, and specifically to early colonial ventures that connected different parts of the world.

Professor Loomba teaches early modern literature, histories of race and colonialism, postcolonial studies, feminist theory, and contemporary Indian literature and culture at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is Catherine Bryson Professor of English.  Her publications include Gender, Race, Renaissance Drama (1989), Colonialism/Postcolonialism (1998), and Shakespeare, Race, and Colonialism (2002).

Caridad Cumana, a film and web communication specialist who is based at the Cuban Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano and collaborates with the Cuban National Cinema Institute (ICAIC), the Havana International Film Festival, and many other Cuban film organizations will present these films.

On September 28, 2011, Professor Walid Hamarneh of the Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures spoke about the events of the ‘Arab Spring’ and the impact of those events on the African continent.  Of course, change continues in North Africa:  in the past week, the government of Libya was overthrown and Tunisians held elections.  Whether or not you attended in September, now is a good time to hear Professor’s Hamarneh’s insights.

MHz Worldview (channel 23-13 on the University cable system) routinely broadcasts episodes of Montalbano (with English subtitles) as part of its International Mystery series.  October 4 and 5, Worldview presents a Montalbano Marathon.  Four new episodes of the series will be broadcast over two nights:

The Potter’s Field   Tuesday, October 4, at 9 p.m.
The Dance of the Seagull   Tuesday, October 4, at 11 p.m.
The Treasure Hunt  Wednesday, October 5, at 9 p.m.
The Age of Doubt   Wednesday, October 5, at 11 p.m.

At least one large-screen TV in the Global Studio will be tuned to Montalbano from 9 p.m. to midnight on October 4 and 5, so come join us for our Sicilian mystery vacation!

Interested in more Montalbano?  Episodes (in Italian with no subtitles) are available on the RAI TV site for the series.  Do you need English subtitles?  The MRC has DVDs of Montalbano episodes with subtitles.  And, of course, you might also enjoy the books, written by the Sicilian author Andrea Camilleri.  The University library has one book in the series in English; public libraries have many more.  Books in the original Italian may be available through inter-library loan or purchased from on line Italian bookstores.

The International Mystery series includes a number of other languages and cultures.  The Inspector Coliandro series is a comic series set in Bologna.  Donna Leon’s Brunetti series–written in English and set in Venice–has been made for TV in German.  Simenon’s Maigret shows up routinely in French.  And a number of well-known ‘Scandinavian noir’ authors are represented.
